if rappers could sue critics for damaging reviews, i’d be locked up for failure to pay guys like Lupe Fiasco, the Shop Boyz, Gwen Stefani, and many others who have released shit LPs.

but then again, who says i’m a critic?

What if artists could sue music critics for negative reviews?

Speaking as a music critic, if any rapper or R&B singer sues me for a negative review they better have a strong argument. They would have to prove — without a shadow of a doubt — that there album sales were directly affected by my negative review. Other than that, journalists are protected by “Freedom of Speech,” period.

In my past experience, I have been threatned with lawsuits over an editorial [peep my story here:
http://beatsandrants.blogs.com/hiphop/2004/12/healing.html ]
and for writing a bad music review about an artist’s album.

I admit in the past, when a PR rep or the artist themselves call my office to threaten me with a case, my heart goes into my drawers. But then I soon realized that they are just mad because I burned their album up with my acidic review.

Understandbly, artists are very sensitivity about their work. But they also need to understand that part of being an artist is to be critique by others in the culture.

Also, today’s reviews don’t hold as much weight as they did back in the days. I remember back in the days when a critic’s music review actually made a difference if an artist’s album would flop or not.

But the intergrity in music reviews has died. Trust me.

Yeah, they are a few critics out there that are brutally honest and tell you if an album is crap or not.

But there are a lot of bogus music critics out here writing positive reviews for crap albums just to get an invite to an album release party or to a video shoot.

It’s an interesting argument though. But it wouldn’t hold much weight in a court of law.

With the Drought 3 and the Carter 3 leaked it’s time for Wezzy to put down the purp and either start taking a hard look at the people in his circle for the leaks, take some money and set up his own cd printing facility or stop pretending that all this music is being leaked.

weezy doesnt seem too concerned about his shit leaking so he either did it himself to keep his fans fed or he figures he has enough material that leaks dont really phase him. he makes music to make it. he knows his shit will sell regardless. he stays paid regardless. so who cares.

leave caring to ppl who dont do it for fun anymore…like black thought (i just read the interview in a link posted in rap ups. the man sounds bitter)
