Videos: Guru + Common / Young Buck + Latoiya

Guru + Common - ‘State of Clarity’

Off the fourth installment of Guru’s renowned Jazzmatazz series, this collabo track has been in my heavy rotation for a while and should be in yours. The video to match is superb to say the least. A throwback to the good ol’ days, it’s unreal: cartoons never looked and sounded so grimy.

Enjoy (and just be yourself)!

EDIT: The video utilizes various clips from Robert Crumb’s ‘Fritz the Cat’ (Big ups to our pal James for the find! ;-P)

Next up we’ve got:

Young Buck + Latoiya Williams - ‘U Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere’

Sure it’s a pretty weak track, but hey, I gotta keep things balanced, right? At least you can get to see Buck Marley dancing by the sea….. (pause)… You might wanna crawl back up to that Guru vid.

I’m just tryna be myself here…I never used to listen to Common before TRU. That’s the illest cartoon i’ve ever seen.

ps-Does playing G-unit videos have some kind of corporate sponsorship behind it or do you just do it for laughs?

2. dcmdva Says:

i dunno about you but the transition in the video to ‘buck the world’ was pretty tight actually

3. Ivan Says:

Nahshon: purely for the laughs. Seriously though, I believe representing both sides of the picture presents to the people the wide gap between what you hear on the radio and what you don’t. I kinda prefer the latter, but hey, who am I to judge, right?

dcmdva: Fair enough, at least from a cinematographic viewpoint. Wow, is that even a word? Guess so…

4. esbee Says:

Who did the video? Is it just off an old ‘toon that someone edited? Still mighty healthy dope regardless…

5. Ivan Says:

^ I’ve been wondering that as well. I would assume they retooled an old cartoon, but which one? Ah! I’m dying to know!

6. James Says:

A quick Google tells me that this cartoon is “Fritz the Cat.”

7. Ivan Says:

Thanks alot James! I added that bit of info to the post.

8. esbee Says:

ahah @ James, thanks dude..figured..just couldn’t remember to place a name..

9. Were Read 2 Def Says:

4 some reason, the 1st thang I thought of before I played the video was…Hawaiian Sophie?

10. Trent Says:

What the fuck is that Guru video? A cartoon? That’s wickety-wack to me.

Are you trying to tell me you couldn’t get two rap legends together to do a video? It didn’t have to be directed by Hype Williams, but damn — a cartoon?

Now here’s the real kicker. I think that Young Buck joint is bangin’. (No Caushun)
The video is wack. They could have chosen a better treatment than the standard “Rapper gets seduce by hot ladies on a exotic locale” bullshit treatment.

Forget these two videos. Nelly’s “Tip Drill” clip is more entertaining than these two duds.

11. ian Says:

Trent is right. The Young Buck video is super generic (but will prolly work where it needs to: BET, MTV2 etc.) but that track is a banger. Anyone saying otherwise is really hating.

12. DAYNE Says:

I like G-Unit but they need new producers. Holla at me

13. Ivan Says:

Ian: To be fair, I think the second Buck track is a banger, not the first one. And the first one is the “primary” video, so….

14. ian Says:

I’m talking about the first track….

15. Ivan Says:

^ lol..good…yeah, I agree, the second one is pretty hot. Nothing groundbreaking though… such as, in my opinion, Kanye’s new tracks.

16. ian Says:

As long as it’s good I don’t really care if it’s groundbreaking or not. There’s only a few visionary cats like Kanye who can manage to do both anyway.
