I’ll Download You

Is that Kanye with the sunglasses?

It’s funny how labels always fret over sales but no one ever stops to realize that they’re not releasing products compelling enough to attract buyers. Now, as easy as it is to heap all the blame on wack rappers and greedy execs it’s also important to note that consumers play a bigger role here. Quality albums don’t move units (cf: Fishscale), duh. Kids will support their favorite rapper even if he decides to fart over beats for the entire duration of an album. It’s safe to say that a big chunk of today’s urban music consumers buy names not titles.

Well put. And fucking dope video. Hilarious. Record execs and the music industry are full of shit. They need a scape goat for their slumping sales and they found one. Unfortunately, correlation does not equal causation. It’s only coincidental that CD sales are plummeting while downloads rise. Rather than blaming it on illegal downloading, labels need to take a hard look at the prepackaged, pop-focused, rehashed, formulaic, same-old same old garbage they continue to produce.

What has happened is that those who consume music have found new methods of exposure to different genres and artist. We no longer have to rely on the Towers, Sam Goodys or Best Buys as our outlet for introduction. And thank God for that. Otherwise we would listen to whatever some merchandising mutherfucker thinks will sell well based off of shitty trend analysis or worse — based off a gut feeling.

If the industry wants to save itself it needs to adapt to the technology and realize that, suprise suprise, the internet, as it levels the palying field of access to information, it is giving us access to a broader range of better music.

We decide the winners, we made these cats rich! On September 11, support Grayskul, not Kanye or 50. Neither of those cats can touch The Skul!
