Video: Lil’ Wayne - Gossip (Live)
Lil Wayne debuted “Gossip,” supposedly off Tha Carter III, at the BET Hip-Hop Awards.
Weezy has his moments, but this is definitely not one of them, though you wouldn’t know it from the crowd’s reaction. After watching this video a couple of times, I still don’t understand how Wayne can be touted as the second coming of Rakim with an average flow and a litany of lazy punchlines.
“My flow’s sick, so sick it’s like my sh*t is dyin.”
Am I missing something here? Is there a special equipment in the market that might help me enjoy Weezy’s music like everyone else? Who knows, maybe my tastes are gradually evolving as I get older.

it might be your tastes cause i like how raps are getting more straight forward… i have a 110% better chance of actually being able to rap along in the car with rappers like Lil wayne and kanye.
that said, if i hear Soulja Boy one more time my head might explode.

The thing is, people are all on him because it’s nice to see that much impovement comin from a rapper that strated doin some wobble-e wobble-a rhymes to I can turn u on like a pesonal TV(sarcastic lol) Honestly, Jay said it best in his new XXL interview (his delivery is extraordinary but what he says isnt always the best things to hear) !
PS:He also said that him and wayne on a same sentence makes no sense(true)and I approve when you said that when we grow up we like finer things, it’s logical
|

talib Says:
no hate against wayne but he stood up there as if he was saying some genious shit.. those ryhmes were close to being wack but to each his own..i agree wit the xxl interview jay had .. waynes style of rap is why he is where he is.. but it aint cuz of his elemtary lyrics
|

i agree with all the comments. it seems like wayne could get out in front of an audience of thousands of people and just making robot noises and people would go crazy just because of how he comes with it

I really dont agree at all, wayne has been and still will be one of the best in the game. if you judge him from a few line in a verse as opposed to his all around rap skills, I can definelty name some wack rhymes Jay said as well. Give the man credit, the fans are not giving all this praise for nothing. only people hating are other rappers and those who barely listen to wayne.
The carter 2 album was nice and carter 3 will be too. everyone saying his rap are subpar, bet they have his album when it releases.

dana Says:
it’s not fair to single out ONE weak rhyme when tha dude has a million hot ones to match it! he’s been doing his thing since 97-98. nobody can take that from him! the dude has definatley grown as an artist! but he still was the shit when he first started! anyone who was up on them hott boys had no doubt in thier minds that wayne would one day become what he is today! when the nay-sayers go back and listen to wayne from the beginning til now, it’s undeniable that the guy is a BEAST!!
|
| 10. |
Magoo Says:
Wait….who the hell is comparing this guy to Rakim? I will say that Weezy has improved alot since his younger days but in no way is he close to being or becoming the second coming of Rakim.
The first time I heard this I thought it was hot and I still do but some of the lyrics are subpar. The energy he brings in the performance is what makes the song hot.
|
| 11. |
RAE Says:
Wait just one fuckin minute..
You suckers mean to tell me that Wayne has the best swagger/mic presence/delivery ever? Are you fucking kidding me? This guy is truly a fuckin retard. One of my best friends is a huge Wayne fan, and I am forced to listen to all of his shit, so spare me the “you dont even listen to Wayne but I bet you’ll have his album” defense because its tired. This dude is laughable.
I cant even believe that you could be puttin this dude on such a high pedastol, it s unbelievable. I am truly in awww that anyone in the right state of mind would ever compare Wayne to Rakim, or even Lil Kim for that matter. This dude is garbage. Anyone hear his verse on Ye’s joint? This guy makes Ye sound like the greatest of all time. Get the fuck out of here.
Yo Rizoh, the equipment you need is called a crack pipe, and you can hit up a dude named Tony down near the subway for the rest. And no, its not that your tastes are evolving as you get older, its that when dudes like you and I were growing up, there were still a multitude of real emcees. Nowadays these kids are crazy man.. bananas. I hate to say it, but once Nas, Jay, and that generation hang up the mic, what we once knew as a beautifully artform is done.
|
| 12. |
Big L Says:
wayne’s passion for the game is unmatched, and that right there is impressive. the dude lives to rap and refuses to stop. his swag is on 110 % all the time, and a lot of his shit is relevant. to release a jam that straight up calls out the rap game itself for stupid bullshit drama and fueds is pretty fucking relevant and i dont see anyone else remotely touching on some of the issues wayne spits about. not to mention he is one of the only rappers that can touch on real deep emotional shit without seeming like a straight pussy…show me someone elsel, right now, that is doing all that and ill stop pimping weezey.
|
| 13. |
Darkpoet Says:
Compared to Brother Ali Wayne’s delivery, lyrics, swagger, or any other mic characteristics are garbage. Wayne is so highly beloved because he, compared to the other mainstream rappers the majority of kids are subjected to, is above average. Of course when 95% of Hip Hop fans hear Soulja Boy next to Lil Wayne they’ll think he’s good when in all honesty Wayne is trash.
|
| 14. |
Antonio Says:
I agree with Darkpoet.
The mainstream is not as good as one would expect, hence Wayne is pimped hard.
But, let’s be serious, there is no comparison between someone like Nas or Raekwon and Weezy.
|
| 15. |
DB Ossi Says:
Stop it with all that swag talk, I’m sick of hearing Wayne and “Swag” in the same sentence. Swag is bullshit, it’s just an excuse for him being a weak MC, am I wrong?
While never the best rapper alive, he has had his fare share of hot lines, but most of those in this particular song…WACK!
My flow is like pasta, take it and eat it.
I’ll leave ya dead like the mink under my sink

The pleas copped for wayne’s supposed “greatness” are as follows:
- He got swagger on the mic!
- Its not his punchlines its the way he delivers them!
- He’s just having FUN in the booth!
It never strays away from those three once you highlight a lot of those weak metaphors and punchlines he uses. Every now and then he may say one thing that will get you saying, “whoa” but those moments are becoming far and in between..
“Gossip” sounds once again like an off the top freestyle, really nothing to get gassed up and overexcited about and if this is the level of quality he’s got for the next album, fans are in for a polite awakening.
|
| 19. |
esbee Says:
and I agree with the poster above, the mainstream is type wack so when someone of wayne’s caliber pushes through, fans latch on because in him they see what they hope the game could have more of and better…
wait till I come out..lol.
|
| 20. |
dpgc Says:
I agree with whoever is saying it’s more his delivery than his rhymes. His voice is fun to listen to. Some of his punchlines that everybody claims are whack make me laugh too. “Crepe…. that’s french for pancake.” When I heard that I had to bust out laughing.
Whoever said this
“i agree with all the comments. it seems like wayne could get out in front of an audience of thousands of people and just making robot noises and people would go crazy just because of how he comes with it”
speaks the truth. I have an image of Wayne on Rapcity making beeps and boops and the internet going nuts for it.

I ain’t on no Weezy dick, dude is hot as fire in the game, not sure why but he is and that that. In order to name some wack rhymes Jay has said all you have to do is put on any Jay track ever played. Jay is wack as fuck and never oh never did he light things up like Wayne. Roll em up in the same wrapper, their just ear candy, neither of them have any lyrical talent, Jay-Z can’t even fucken rhyme without pulling out biggie’s book.
If you were to compare Wayne to ‘one of the greats’ Jay-Z would be the closest comparison, they both blown up with next to no talent. And they both talk real big fucken game. There is a reason that neither of them allow a lot of featured artists on their albums, they get ether’d on their own shit.

Donny F Says:
If anyone wants the title of greatest rapper alive let em’ have it. This shit isn’t even worth arguing over because he’s an icon to people between 8 and 25 (or even 30) depending on what music they were brought up around. But once people start talking about his lyrics being the best or on a Rakim level, that’s shows me you have no idea what elite lyrical fitness is.
Now, before the Wayne Marines swoop down on my post with a little “shock and awe”, I will say I love what Weezy has been doing and have heard 99% of his music. I will never say he is pure garbage because to me that’s going a bit to far. Is he a good lyricist? Hell yeah. But is he great??? To me, the word great doesn’t carry the same weight it used to. To be labeled as a great lyricist you have to at least clear the bar that’s been set….and these days the bar has been lowered to accommodate the over all lack of lyrical talent.
For one, having someone claim to give u steriods (ghostwriting your shit) is a downgrade for me. It doesn’t mean I hate you now, it just means that my antenna is up now when it comes to whatever you drop. And it is the same antenna that noticed once he and Juelz Santana started getting friendly, Weezy’s lyrical style became more punchline infested. I don’t doubt Weezy writting his own lyrics of late, but I do see how Santana rubbed off on him.
A lyrically great song is Gun Draws by Pharoahe Monch
. Even his verse in 1994’s Stray Bullet when he was a member of Organized Konfusion can match up against anything Weezy has written. And that’s were the problem lies. Until he accends to that level he will always be food for those who know what elite lyrical fitness is.

no offense to Wayne but, he is the best at Dumbing iT Down. He’s flow is his own and his lyrics are so singalongable. I’m proud of him for doing his own thing. His lyrics aren’t always the best to everyone, but you cant please everyone at the same time. Just let him do him. He isnt the best and he aint the worst.
|

DSuper Says:
It’s called the snow ball effect. Weezy called himself the best and people rolled with it and eventually believed it. Just like when TI kept saying he was the king. Now people call him the King of the South like he could eff with Scarface, 3000, etc. Wayne’s aight, but he’s not the nicest.

Nice job BTRIM. You did a better job simply quoting this moron than I could have in a week talking to these droids. They got to much Weezy jizz in the ears.
But for children like DB OSsi little guy, the songs are dumb enough to understand so I get why most of you little teenie boppers like this fucking tired excuse for a rapper.
The same people who somehow managed to change the meaning of freestyle into ‘pre-written lyrics perfectly tuned to someone else’s beat.’ But yeah I respect your opinions for sure.
And did anyone answer my question? How the fuck could “the greatest rapper of our time” Weezy be outshined so clearly by a second-rate, momma’s boy, pathetic excuse for any kind of a lyricist?
“Yeah! I’m so bright not shady
My tee and my ice so white like Shady
Ice in my teeth so re-friger-rated
I’m so f**kin Good, like I’m sleepin wit Meagan
I’m all about my “Franklins”, “Lincolns”, and “Reagans”
Whenever they make them, I shall hay-ve them
Oops I meant have them, Im so crazy
But if you play crazy you’ll be sleepin wit daisies
I’m such a hay-vic, oops I meant havit
And my drink’s still pinker than the Easter Rabbit
And I’m still cold like Keisha’s family
Stove on my waist turn beef to patties
And i ate it, cuz I’m so at it (plenty homo)
I dont front and I dont go backwards
And I dont practice
and I dont lack shit
And you can get Barry
To suck my bat bitch!”

Riz,
You don’t feel Drought 3? Or Cannon?
I feel like I have pretty standard college white boy tastes (Ye, Talib, Lupe, Jay, Ghostface, Nas, Biggie etc.) but I could listen to that mixtape time and time again. He doesn’t bring it on his albums like he does on there, but from song one I think he just kills it. His flow over the We Takin Over beat is sick, and his defense of the whole Baby controversy is great. Then he can just switch up his flow and kill it over Dead Presidents.
A few of my favorite lines from Dedication 2:
From Cannon: “I gotta tote the (Cannon)
Listen close, I got duct tape and rope
I leave you missing like the fucking O’bannons”
From Sportscenter, well, all of sportscenter is hot, but in particular I love this:
I’m servin’ this track like, Stephie Graph yeah
Roger Federer, there’s no competitors
N****z know my rhetorhic, bitches know my preference
Young God baby, all them other n****z reverends
http://www.ohhla.com/anonymous/lilwayne/dedicat2/sportscn.wyn.txt
Georgia Bush is pretty hot too, and I don’t remember hearing any mainstream rappers referring to President Johnson and Hurricane Betsy
http://www.ohhla.com/anonymous/lilwayne/dedicat2/geo_bush.wyn.txt
From Drought 3:
I am a vegetarian I only eat beats/where the biggest carrots/and i smoke the best green.
I think he absolutely kills Jay on Show Me What You Got (not that that was Jay’s most inspired effort, but Wayne just launches into it, the video of him on Youtube singing it is one of my favorite things to watch, crazy energy).
Mostly, the two mixtapes won me over, I haven’t loved his albums, or his guest appearances really, but give him somebody else’s beats and no commercial requirements, and I think he brings it better than anybody out there right now. And I swear pitchfork didn’t brainwash me.

I might add that I’m impressed by his ability to use his accent to his advantage despite the detractors on this thread. Yeah the Keisha Cole line is pretty wack, and Wayne came lazy on that Kanye, but damn he does it well on these mixtapes.
I also like the fact that he’s kind of crazy, from Ride:
Relying on rap, but in the kitchen I’m a chemist,
And when I was 5, my favorite movie was the gremlins
Aint got sh*t to do with this, but I just thought that I should mention,
You looking for devine and the little intervention,
And them birds don’t fly, without my permission,
I’m probably in the sky, flying with the fishes,
Or maybe in the ocean, swimming with the pigeons,

The Greatest? Who cares! Hip Hop: it should be split up into two categories: Dance hits for the club and Lyrical hits. People get fed what they want to eat! Some people just listen to music for entertainment purposes. for example: to dance, to bang in their car, to barbque, etc. Nothing wrong with that. You cant say it is easier to dance to NAS than to soulja boy! Its just that the entertainment crowd outnumbers the lyrical crowd and businesses take notice. The reason why people like weezy is because he is in between. Catchy and somewhat lyrical. But not lyrical enough to deter from the entertainment. Ya dig!
|
| 57. |
hey Says:
to add to the above: when we realize that the hip hop world is changing and that there are two different type of groups that listen to it, this dumb hip hop is dying crap will end. We forget that music can be a type of relief from the rest of the world and that some of us listen, not to analyze and see who can be lyrically the best, but to put away all that thinking and just bob our heads! Unfortunately like i said there are more who like it for its rythmn rather than its content. Nothing wrong with that.

lmfao, that’s funny what dude said up top.. because Wayne’s lyrics are the truth. Folks are in here gossipping about a man who doesn’t even know they exist (I seriously doubt that he gives a flip) and a man whose still getting money at the end of the day. I AM NOT A WAYNE HEAD in the least, but yall don’t butter his bread, so relax. Gosh. *waits to be stoned*
