Lupe Fiasco’s The Flop?

lu_jckt.jpg

For those of you who care about these sorts of things, Lupe’s second go-round Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool barely registered on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. It debuted at No. 15 with 143,000. For the rest of us, it’s still the No.1 rap album of 2007.

man this some old bullshit!!!!

that shit should have been 500,00 the first week.

Lupe keep pushing brotha!!!!!

don’t let these sales get to you.

2. p2p Says:

500,000 i meant.

3. p2p Says:

Another thing is…..katz ain’t buying his shit, i bet you the only ones that supported this number was chi-town. come on people, he flipped his whole style for this album, this album is raw!!!!!!!

fuck all those bastards that burned his album!

4. ADB Says:

Just emphasises what we should already know - record sales aren’t a fair reflection or indicator of artistic quality.

This is not a new problem, it’s only the interweb age that’s highlighting this even more. Stevie Wonder never had a no 1 album in the UK but does that efect my view of his quality

Rawkus Admin Says:

Damn Rizoh is 145K sold first week considered a flop in this market?

6. young cheezy Says:

how is this a flop when his first lp only sold 80,000. get your head out your ass. stop trippin off of first week sales.

7. khal Says:

it might be kind of early to consider this a flop, given the kind of MC Lupe is.

now if he continues to go downhill after this week, then yeah its a flop.

8. the guy Says:

143 000 is no flop. That would usually get you a top 5 spot. He only debuted at 15 because more people bought albums like Garth Brooks, ‘Now 26′, Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood as stocking stuffers that week.

They predicted 160k; it sold 143k. That’s clearly a disappointment for the head honchos at Atlantic. Anyone remember what happened after Ultimate Victory sold 80k? Universal ditched the album, which led Cham to hit the road and work it on his own. Bottom Line: First week numbers mean everything to the labels.

@young cheese: Do you read posts or do you just skim through?

10. bubba paris Says:

i downloaded it like everyone else… but it’s definitely good enough for me to get out and grab a copy. this entry solidified my decision.

143 ain’t too bad…

12. the guy Says:

It sold 90% of what they hoped. Common and UGK did about the same numbers and debuted at #1, were those cosnidered flops? I think Lupe will get some more push.

13. Someone Says:

Come Riz, In today’s climate i’m shocked it did that much. I bought 3 albums and gave them to family members as gifts for the holidays. This news comes as a surprise to no one, shiiiiiiit even Lupe knows this, y’all niggas wanna see Lu do good buy “THE COOL” for yourself or for those ignant ass friends we all have. peace…

14. D_md/dc Says:

How does No.15 out of 200 = “barely registered” ???

Clearly that was just the standard Lyor and Kevin Liles hype. For this kid to do 60K more 1st week than his debut album with virtually no radio play and limited set up and some video spins is AMAZING. Anyone who thinks otherwise has no understanding of how the music industry works. The guy, Rawkus admin. and Young Cheesy are all right: MAJOR props to Lupe on this great number. This kid is gonna be like Common - he’s gonna keep gaining fans, acclaim and sales with each new album. I may not have believed at the beginning but he’s gonna WIN the long game!

16. insideOUT Says:

That is bull numbers. Over here it was sold out everywhere. Either it was undershipped or them numbers arent right. The album is great and worth listening to.

Those numbers dont sound that bad.. is it just that bad because it was the Holidays Week were records are expected to sell really well, like Nas’ hiphop is dead which did what 300k

18. shammy Says:

come on, the way people are downloading music these days 143,000 is a solid first week. The album is crazy #9 is the hottness!! keep making that fire Lupe.

Anyone who did not believe in Lupe when he debuted with 80k, but now suddenly believes in him because he sold 143k has no understanding on how believing in the right artists works.

20. khal Says:

i never believed in Lupe, and i’m kind of surprised he sold that much. where 160K was coming from is anyone’s guess. do you see Lupe going gold with this CD?

21. Anonymous Says:

YOU PEOPLE ARE DEF. UNCLEAR WHEN IT COMES TO THE MUSIC BUSINESS. THE WAY SALES ARE IN THIS TIME: 140,000 PLUS COPIES IS ACTULLAY REALLY GOOD. HE WILL BE GOLD IN WEEKS TO COME. iT IS A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR LUPE, AND HIS LABEL. U PEOPLE NEED TO DO UR RESEARCH, THIS GUT DID NOT EVEN HAVE THAT MUCH PROMO. THINK ABOUT IT. BEANIE SIGEL SOLD 49,000 NOW THATS A DISSAPOINTMENT, AS WELL AS FREE WAY, REDMAN, MEATHOD MAN, GHOST FACE. THIS IS WAT U CALL A DISSAPOINTMENT. BIG UP REAL TALK//JERSEY HOLLA YA BOY KNOCK.

Yeah, I’m wondering how coming in at #15 is “barely registering on the Billboard 200″….

23. Gmoney Says:

for some reason i dont think lupe gives a shit… but it def aint a good look for craig, lyor and the rest of the TI’s in the WMG building… they had the worse year in their music biz history… thats crazy…

24. the coolest n***a Says:

dispite this, it was still 2007 AotY hands down!

25. T2 Says:

Rizoh is right the Lupe album was a flop imo he should of sold way more he is in his prime he should be up their with T.I., Kanye, Hov, 50 etc because they are the ones that are not affected by the lack of sales.

The ones that #21 mentioned aint relevant and nobody was anticipating there albums as much as they were Lupe.

26. Truff Says:

He official

27. Truff Says:

T2 you should think about what you write before you write. You sound like a hater.

28. JaeMez Says:

I think its funny that this album is number 1 in the country now. lol
