“Star-Spangled Banner” Replaced with “Black National Anthem”

Jazz singer René Marie replaced the “Star-Spangled Banner” with “Lift Every Voice” (aka Black National Anthem) at Denver’s State of the City address. I’m not sure if her performance was funny, arrogant, or downright distasteful? Who knows, maybe she’ll start a Back to Africa movement tomorrow. I’m sure Mos Def would be available to lend a hand.

Good thing we live in a place where freedom of speech is permissible. Not in a place where a gallon of milk costs $24 Billion and a right to free speech comes with the unattractive price of death penalty.

I think it was a bad move, but hearing about this story made me appreciate that we would sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at my elementary school…you don’t really realize at the time that they’re trying to instill pride in your race in you, but when you get older, and you see how they try to strip you of your heritage, you appreciate little stuff like that.

So basically, I don’t think it was the best move should could’ve made at the time, but, I’ve still got love for her.
