LA Times Apologizes for Fake Diddy-2Pac Story

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

If you’re among those who seriously believed that Diddy had anything to do with 2Pac’s 1994 shooting, then you got your April Fool’s a little early this year. The Smoking Gun examined documents used in the LA Times story and found that they were created by a convicted con man and rap fan notorious for exaggerating his place in the hip-hop world. They also noticed that the so-called FBI documents seemed phony because they were written on a typewriter instead of a computer. Apparently the dumbass who created the fake documents didn’t realize that feds stopped using typewriters 30 years ago.

They also found structural errors, grammatical deficiencies, phrases and acronyms that are inconsistent with FBI lingo, among other things.

Chuck Philips who did the story apologized on LAT’s website, saying: “In relying on documents that I now believe were fake, I failed to do my job. I’m sorry.”

Diddy’s reading the retraction right now going “I told you so.” I’d be surprised if he doesn’t sue them for defamation or something.

As if it’s not bad enough that Afeni Shakur and Suge Knight have made a hobby out of releasing half-assed posthumous 2Pac albums, heaven knows why they chose to release the latest one as two separate CDs with two different themes. Did it ever occur to them that Shakur is best consumed as ThugLife? The one billed Best of 2Pac, Pt. 2: Thug shifted a mere 22,500 units, but it outsold the Life side by 3,600 units. This implies that people are more drawn to the grimier side of Pac’s music. And you wonder why there’s a proliferation of pseudo gangstas in the game.

Anyhoo, Pac’s Greatest Hits CD wasn’t the only new rap album that debuted this week. Here’s how the rest of them performed on the chart: (more…)
