When Tanya Morgan (Von Pea, Ilyas, and DonWill) debuted with Moonlighting in 2006, they didn’t seem to care that their rap name appeared misleading to many. Moreover, their album cover was a female with a black bar across her eyes, which led some to believe that Tanya was in fact a chick. Their reasoning back then was “If Alice in Chains can do it, so can we.” Well, the difference is that Alice in Chains is a rock group and Tanya Morgan is not. That partially explains why Moonlighting — a solid introductory album — went unnoticed when it dropped. I commend them for trying to break the mold, but I’d hate to see these talented brothers go down under the CunningLynguists Curse.
As you can see from the new cover, they’ve decided to play it safe this time.
Back when I was still blogging at SOHH (sometime in ‘06), I remember having this weird discussion about the possibility of a gospel rap album from Bushwick Bill. People cringed at the idea. Fast forward to 2008, what most people considered a nightmare is now on the brink of reality. I’m excited about this, because if anyone can make the transition from rapping about murdering your niece and raping your bitch to preaching the gospel on wax, it’s Bushwick Bill.
My boy Sketch, who had a chance to check out an advance copy of Bushwick’s Testimony of Redemption, sent me the tracklist and cover art. (more…)
